2018 Quilt Show

Welcome to ‘Along the Silver Thread’

Welcome to our 8th Biennial Along the Silver Thread Quilt Show. We think you will love what you see. One of the unique things about the Silver Threads Quilt Guild is that not only do many of our members live in this area permanently, but many members reside in other states for part of the year. This part of Colorado is a wonderful place to spend the summer and fall, and our members return year after year. We are pretty sure we are the only quilt show in America that is held in an underground mine! It couldn’t happen without the way the entire community works to make this such an outstanding show. Enjoy the show as much as we enjoy putting it on! For a second year we are showing vintage quilts, be sure and look for them near the large quilts.

Raffle Quilt

Our beautiful raffle quilt, “Along the Silver Thread,” was designed and created by guild members Marcie Vitopil, Janice Torres, Anne Strong, Penny Snyder, Diane Singer,  Vi Koch, Beth Kendall, and Sheralyn Humble.  Anne created the embroidered scenes from photographs of iconic buildings in Creede.  Marcie, Janice, and Beth created the other scenes in the center of the quilt from beautiful views from the South Fork, Creede and Lake City area. Penny did the bordering star piecing Vi and Diane arranged and assembled all of the scenes and stars and borders.  Sheralyn designed and appliqued the Columbines on the border, and Diane magnificently quilted it. All of the revenue from ticket sales allows us to fund many community projects, which include local fire departments, quilts for Veterans, new Habitat for Humanity homes, and Ronald McDonald House, to name a few. We thank you for your support.

Viewer’s Choice Awards

Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite quilt in each of the categories. The Viewer’s Choice winning quilts will be sporting their ribbons on Sunday. Visitors on Friday and Saturday may attend FREE on Sunday with their ticket from either previous day.

Our Judge

Cindy Brick has been teaching, writing about and judging quilts, especially their history and cultural significance, since 1984. She has written six books, including *Hanky Panky Crazy Quilts* (13 printings), *Crazy Quilts* (considered a reference in its field) and *Quilts of the Golden West*, a pioneer quilts book.  She also has written hundreds of articles on all areas of crafting, antiques, frugality and other issues, for print, as well as on her blog and as staffer for others.  Her judging credits include Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, Pacific International, the Denver Quilt Festival and the International Quilt Festival (Houston).

She is an accredited personal property appraiser, from the American Quilter’s Society and the American Society of Appraisers, now working on her 21st year in the field. She appraises all sorts of items, from furniture to jewelry and textiles.

Cindy currently lives and works in Castle Rock, CO with her husband and two loopy golden labs, but will soon be moving into a 30-foot fifth wheel, and doing some traveling.

Participating members of Silver Threads Quilt Guild had the option of having their quilts judged by Cindy Brick.  (If the entry number of the quilt has a “J” following the number, the entry was judged.) The award ribbons were awarded before the quilt show opened on Friday morning, and are separate from the Viewer’s Choice ribbons which will be awarded Saturday evening.

Our Appraiser

This year we will have two people doing quilt appraisals.  A $40 fee will be charged for each written appraisal. Verbal consultations are free of charge. Check at the front desk for additional information.

Donna Skvarla is an American Quilter’s Society Certified Appraiser and will be onsite throughout the show.
